Double Heddle Intermediate/Advanced class: Must be able to warp your own loom and is comfortable with threading & weaving more complicated two-heddle structures.

How do you weave 4- shaft weave patterns on a rigid heddle loom?

The class project in two colors of your choice.

Twills - those fabulous diamonds, diagonals and points that are possible with a rigid heddle loom and incorporate them into your favorite projects.

  • Your twill sampler includes diamonds and zigs that can switch colors with only one shuttle. You can choose a single diamond design or a more complicated 3 diamond design.

  • Prior to class, there’s a 1.5 hour zoom call to learn how to read 4-shaft Twill patterns review the “Warp at Home” instructions.

  • At home, with very detailed instruction, you’ll wind a one-color warp, thread the slots and holes into just one heddle - easy.

  • In class, you’ll thread the 2nd heddle, the pick-up sticks, weave your sampler and explore more twills on your own.

What you’ll learn

❋ How to read and interpret 4-shaft patterns for Rigid Heddle Weavers. The Primer includes drawdown exercises so you’ll know how patterns turn into woven cloth with lots of Twill examples for your future projects.

❋ How to manage two heddles, thread the slots and holes, and use a pick-up stick the other shafts.

❋ How and why to use a heddle rod when 2 pick-up sticks would collide.

❋ Hints on threading the holes, getting great warp tension, how to lash on your warp plus hemstitching.

❋ Material Requirements:

  • Able to warp and weave on your own, have used pick-up sticks and is ready to learn more complicated structures.

  • Your own rigid heddle loom 12" or wider with a double heddle block or 2 heddle blocks.

  • Two heddles the same size and from the same manufacturer, 2-3 pick up sticks 15" or wider, plus one 1/3-1/2" dowel 15" or wider.

  • Yarn options and other basic supplies to come.

❋ Notes:

  • Only plant or acrylic fibers are allowed in the weaving studio.

  • Ashford heddles are available for purchase (with advance notice).

  • Please re-schedule if you have Covid or Flu symptoms.

  • Please refrain from wearing ANY perfumes/colognes or scented products.
